Judy Carpenter began her fiber odyssey in Massachusetts at the age of five when she was invited to join her grandmother's sewing circle.  Oh what a young girl won't do to sit, gossip and drink coffee with the ladies!  Embroidery was her first love, then came knitting, and then many years of garment construction followed.  When her daughter grew out of wearing smocked and French Hand Sewn dresses, it was time to investigate all manner of embroidery and fiber art.  Quilting became the hobby of choice in the early '90s, and then it was time to begin hand dyeing cottons for those quilts!  When dye hits silk, it's a whole new ball game, and that has led to this current chapter in Judy's life.    She has had the privilege of studying with many fiber artists, including Yvonne Porcella, Susan Louise Moyer, Hollis Chatelain, Barbara Baker, Jeri Boe, Cara Gulati, Sue Beevers, Rayna Gillman, and Betsy Sterling Benjamin.   Judy lives and dyes in Gainesville, GA with her husband and Standard Poodle, Barker.   Her work is on display and for sale at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, www.quinlanartscenter.org, and she teaches both quilting and dyeing classes at Intown Quilters in Decatur, Georgia.  Judy dyes mainly commissioned pieces, so please contact her () for that special gift, either for a friend or yourself.
